If you are running on a treadmill for the first time, you must know that the first and most important rule is to go slow. However, most of us end up starting at a high speed rather than going slow and increasing the speed slowly. And according to Rick Muhr, Endurance and Running coach, Boston Marathon and Octane fitness, this is one of the most common mistakes that almost every other gym-goer working on a treadmill does. In addition to this, most people tend to run too far and too fast on a treadmill, which is not the right way to run on a treadmill. In fact, one should run slowly for the first mile as it helps you get acclimatised to running and also helps you to adjust to the rhythm of running. In this way, it improves the efficiency and the overall output of the workout. Here are a few dos and don’ts you must follow while running on a treadmill by Boston Marathon coach.
Another common mistake that most people commit while running on a treadmill is that they bend forward while running, which causes you to lose the form and further increases pressure on the joints. In fact, the trick to get the most of a treadmill workout is to keep your upper body relaxed and maintaining your posture. Also, keep in mind that most people try to hold the breath while running which is not good. Make sure you breathe at the normal pace as you start and then slowly increase the speed. Also, running too fast and not relaxing the upper body while running can alter the gait, which puts additional stress on the body and also disturb the balance, making it difficult to run.
